How to Style a Statement Coat

The right statement coat will be a winterwear staple you reach for again and again. It will instantly elevate an evening ensemble and polish a daytime look. When styling a statement coat, the key is to keep the rest of the outfit classic, streamlined, simple, and elegant. Let the coat be the focus, and let the rest of the outfit play best supporting actress.

Last winter, I saw the most gorgeous faux leopard coat in the petites section of TopShop during a trip to Los Angeles.  However, I had packed light, and really didn't have room to tote home an unexpected bulky purchase. And, I wasn't totally sure I had found THE COAT. But I was sure that the statement coat for me was going to be faux leopard.  What an iconic jacket style!

I finally found THE COAT at Nordstrom (Steve Madden makes it) about a month later and I have loved it since I first spotted it (pun intended). It was surprisingly affordable - I believe I paid under $100 for it - and although it isn't available this season, plenty of similar jackets are still out there.

For this look, I wore my statement jacket with a black pencil skirt and a green sweater. Since it's holiday season, I added an embellished belt and patent heels.
