I had a friend from college who married a girl he loved, and then years later, divorced her. “What happened?” I asked, when he came over for dinner one evening to break the news. “She’s angels and I’m science,” he told me. “It wasn’t going to last forever.”
Is it true, like, really true? Can angels people and science people find a way to be together forever? Or is it a fundamental difference that no amount of mutual respect can suffice to smooth over?
When I was younger, I thought the answer was no—angels people and science people are too fundamentally different to make it work. However, the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve come to embrace angels and science as part of a pretty flexible spectrum. I myself was staunchly down at the science end for the first couple decades of my life. However, ten years into marriage with a Catholic I adore and two out of three kids baptized, I think my answer has changed.
Life is a delicious buffet, and there actually aren’t any rules about how you decide what to put on your plate. Furthermore, you aren’t going to be in the mood for the same meal every day. My internal compass is governed by curiosity and compassion, and the more I have learned to act in accordance with those guiding principles, the more delightful and varied the companions along my journey have become.
Enjoy the sunshine! Happy Sunday, and thanks for reading.
