A Classic Menswear Silhouette

When you wear an outfit that feels quintessentially, undeniably, you, it feels fantastic.  Menswear has been a longtime favorite of mine for everyday wear.  When I was teaching, one of my go-to looks was the dress shirt and tie combo.  Definitely unexpected on a female, but with a pair of heels, you tell the world (and more importantly, yourself) that you have exactly what it takes to get the job done.

I have always been drawn to the fabrics, tones, and shapes of menswear. I love the streamlined simplicity of a neatly tailored jacket, and the way that light layers sensibly transition into the cooler months. Years ago, someone dear passed away and willed me an incredible collection of neckties. It's always with a nostalgic fondness that I put together a look that incorporates one of them.

Black on Black

Hello, everyone!

My husband and I explored a beautiful little hidden gem over the past weekend, the Japanese garden in Hayward. What a calm oasis in the middle of the hectic East Bay! We went early in the morning and only encountered a few other visitors.  With three kids - one of whom had been in urgent care the day before with a reasonably serious injury - we really savor quiet moments when we can take the time to be reflective.

The weather lately has been pretty standard late-winter northern California temperatures, meaning foggy, chilly mornings but sun later in the day. Since we went to the Japanese garden early, I bundled up. I think the black on black palette makes a sharp contrast to the abundance of natural greenery.

If you are local, I definitely recommend a visit to the Hayward Japanese garden. It was lovely!

Weekend Wear

If I'm hanging out with my kiddos (favorite hobby, of course!) I have to keep it casual because whatever children come into contact with ends up covered in stains. Fact. Here's what I have going on today.

Which leads me to one of my best kept secrets.  If you are on the small side, depending on your bust and hip measurements, you can get away with shopping the kids department from time to time.  Bonus: it's way cheaper! For this look, I am wearing not one, not two, but three items I purchased in the children's department. Can you guess all three?
